An unpredictable and fascinating world
A rich night for Atlus, which after taking the stage at the Summer Game Fest to pique the public’s interest, subsequently staged the second Showcase dedicated to Metaphor: ReFantazio (already pre-orderable at GameStop at this link), in which he revealed so many details of the game coming out on October 11th on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series
You can follow the entire video (narrated and subtitled in English) at the end of the article, while we offer you a summary of the various points covered:
- The battle system is hybrid and allows you to have an initial action approach, so as to cause preventive damage and status, and then move on to classic turn-based battles. The weakest enemies can be defeated already in the action phase.
- The game will feature the equivalent of role-playing game classes (or JRPG jobs). They are called Archetypes, they are basically 14 but can evolve and generate new Archetypes, exceeding 40 in total.
- The awakening and management of the Archetypes takes place in the fascinating Akademia, a place of study watched over by a character who seems to have the protagonist’s fate at heart.
- The typologies are classic: the Seeker, the archetype of the protagonist, is able to do a bit of everything, the Mage can cast powerful spells, the Thief is equipped with skills such as theft, the Brawler prefers attacks with his fists and so Street. Interesting are the variations on the theme such as the Merchant, who uses money-based attacks, the Faker capable of deceiving enemies, and even more so the evolutions such as Masked Dancer, Summoner and Berserker.
- Each Archetype can improve after battles, acquiring experience and new skills and then evolving into a new type.
- The relationship with the NPCs present in the game influences the development of the Archetypes: creating bonds and influences, for example the Seeker can evolve into a Magic Seeker or Soul Hacker.
- The title is created with the participation of many guest artists: in the case of Archetype, the design work was not only handled by Shigenori Soejima, but also by Yuji Himukai, character designer of the Etrian Odyssey series.
- The combat system is inspired by Shin Megami Tensei’s Press-Turn: the turns available depend on the number of party members, and by hitting an enemy’s weak point you get an extra turn. However, this also applies to opponents.
- It is possible to choose the positioning of the party, placing the more or less effective characters in the front or in the rear. The Archetype Commander can change the position of party members in battle thanks to her abilities.
- Synthesis is a special technique that allows you to consume two actions instead of one to obtain extra effects: the Mage and the Healer, who can only use their skills on one character, can extend them to all enemies / the whole party with Synthesis . With Synthesis it is possible to change the attributes of some attacks or perform devastating combined attacks depending on the Archetypes deployed on the field.
- The equipped Archetype also determines the weapon that will be used in action mode: the Seeker has a fast sword, while the Warrior will equip the protagonist with a large sword with which to attack enemies on the map without the risk of incurring preventative attacks from opponents.
- It is not possible to change the Archetype during a turn-based battle, so the player will have to balance his “action” playstyle with the classic one.
- Dungeons are full of enemies and can present particular challenges, which will force the player into battle and prevent him from escaping. There are also “Humans”, the most peculiar and complex enemies to face.
- There are no blocks or class/Archetype limits for visiting dungeons. The difficulty level is scalable at any time.
- There is a network function that allows you to view the compositions of the parties that have overcome the challenge we are facing, being able to instantly equip the setup that convinces us most among those who have successfully preceded us.
In closing, as well as remembering the splendid Collector’s EditionAtlus has also published a new trailer entitled “Awaken”, which we propose below.
