In the sunny early evening of Friday, there were masses of energetic Metallica fans in front of the Olympic Stadium.
Through in the center of Helsinki on Friday, there were groups dressed in dark clothes, whose clothing repeated the same name. A cavalcade of band shirts revealed that one of the most respected metal bands of all time has arrived in Finland.
Now is the weekend that the most enthusiastic fans have been waiting for since the end of 2022. It was then announced that Metallica would perform two different shows at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium as part of their world tour, which started in April 2023.
The tour started in Amsterdam shortly after Metallica released their eleventh studio album titled 72 Seasons. Metallica, who have performed 20 times in Finland since 1984, will be seen at the Olympic Stadium on June 7 and 9.

Their, who grabbed tickets to both concerts, there’s no need to fear two identical concert experiences, because Metallica has a habit of to vary the program of the gig from night to night. This is how the band has operated since 2004 to avoid being on autopilot, the drummer who prepares the song lists for the concerts Lars Ulrich told The New York Times last summer in the interview.
For example, two weeks ago at the Olympic Stadium in Munich, Metallica played completely different songs at two shows.
Witnessed the opening weekend of Metallica’s summer European tour Hans Lachner sat on Friday in the refreshment area built on the side of the Olympic Stadium with his brother and friends. Lachner, who lives in southern Munich, had arrived in Helsinki with a group of nine people for Metallica’s gig.
Lachner, 48, says he has been a fan of Metallica since 1989. He has seen the band live 61 times.
“If possible, I want to see a hundred shows. As long as the band stays healthy, and so do we,” says Lachner.
Although he has seen a respectable number of concerts, Lachner never gets tired of Metallica’s live performances.
“When they come on stage, I get goosebumps, and sometimes tears come to my eyes.”

Rosa Lehikoinen (right), who was waiting for the gig to start with Toni Pethmani (left) and Suvi Pethmani, had traveled to Finland from Frankfurt, where she currently lives. He states that he is a big fan of Metallica. “Metallica is life,” says Suvi Pethman. He says that he has been listening to the band for 20 years and that he has seen Metallica ten times before. He hoped for “a lot of old stuff” from the evening’s concert, and Lux Æterna and Screaming Suicide songs from the new album. Picture: Rio Gandara / HS
Tuure Marttinen (left), 19, and Joona Tuomivirta, 21, had come to see Metallica for the first time. Fans who arrived in Helsinki from Vantaa and Järvenpää found tickets for both Friday and Sunday’s concerts. Both say that they play thrash metal themselves, although their abilities are not yet enough for stages like the Olympic Stadium. The duo says they hope for a great atmosphere and good songs from the evening’s gig. “It’s Metallica after all,” says Marttinen. Picture: Rio Gandara / HS

Veikko Vainio had come to the gig from Lieto with his son Mio. He says that he listens to Metallica occasionally and a little less than his son, but the expectations for the evening’s concert were relatively high. “We came to see them once they perform in Finland,” says Vainio. For Finnish-Swedish Susanne Gustafsson, Friday’s gig would be her third Metallica concert. “Oh, this band, that whole,” Gustafsson enthuses. He has been listening to Metallica since around 2008, but the band is not exactly his favorite band. “Bon Jovi is my favorite,” Gustafsson elaborates. Picture: Rio Gandara / HS
11-year-old Mio (left) and Olli, who belong to the Ojatalo family, were escorting Jenni and 9-year-old Neo to the concert. Olli Ojatalo had a ticket to Sunday’s concert, while Mio wasn’t going to either gig. It didn’t bother him. Jenni Ojatalo says that she has been listening to Metallica since she was a child and that she has seen the band before, for example, in Suvilahti. “Tonight, I want to be surprised, and I don’t know in advance what will happen,” Ojatalo says.
