Through the pages of Android Central, comes the news of Meta’s decision to close Ready at Dawn with immediate effectstudio led by Andrea Pessino author of VR games such as Lone Echo series and previously PlayStation exclusive titles such as The Order: 1886God of War: Chain of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta and Daxter.
Ready at Dawn joined Oculus Studio in June 2020, alongside the launch of Echo VR on Oculus Quest. In 2021, it had released Lone Echo 2which had received generally favorable reviews from the press and the public. In April last year Meta had already fired about a third of the developers of the study and now the “coup de grace” has arrived.
The Future of Employees and Oculus Studios
A company spokesperson confirmed the studio’s closure to the portal, justifying the decision to ensure that Meta’s Reality Labs division, which deals with the Quest family of devices, is within budget and that Oculus Studios, which included Ready at Dawn, can have a “better long-term impact” in the development of VR projects. He also assured that this is not the first in a series of large cuts to first-party teams, with the company that still aims at the virtual reality sectordespite financial reports showing losses in the billions of dollars.
Meta says that Ready at Dawn employees are encouraged to apply elsewhere within Oculus Studios and that The company wants to retain as many talented developers as possibleso hopefully most employees will continue to have permanent jobs.
