Argentina have won the Copa América by beating reigning champions Brazil 1-0. The only goal in the fierce match was scored by striker Ángel Di María. For the Argentine star Lionel Messi, who won everything at club level with FC Barcelona, the victory means his first big prize with Argentina.
For the now 34-year-old Lionel Messi, who lost three Copa América finals and a World Cup final during his career, the South American championship in Brazil was one of the last opportunities to win another major trophy for his country. During the tournament, the playmaker already took his team by the hand several times with important goals, but Messi barely appeared in the final.
The match at the Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro was constantly halted due to hard violations from both sides. Neither team managed to become really dangerous either and Angél Di Maria’s goal in the 22nd minute, a bounce over the keeper after a long ball from the defence, came out of nowhere. Brazil managed to create a few more chances in the second half and Messi missed a big chance in the final phase of the match, but the overall victory was never really in danger.
