The party leaders of the CDU and CSU fought a duel over the candidacy for chancellor. There is now agreement. The CDU leader wants this to also become a feature of a new federal government.
Augsburg – CDU leader Friedrich Merz underlined the Union’s desire to lead after the next federal election in Germany at the party conference of the Bavarian sister party CSU in Augsburg. “We are determined to win this federal election in a year,” said Merz to the party conference delegates.
Merz: No dissonances in the Union
But what is then needed is a government that stops arguing all the time. A country whose government is constantly arguing cannot find peace. “We will lead a government in which public disputes will finally stop,” emphasized Merz. The next federal government must also regain trust in the reliability and stability of politics.
There are no dissonances within the Union, said Merz. “We have found a new way of working together, in the CDU and CSU.”
The CDU leader prevailed against Söder in the internal duel between the sister parties over the candidacy for chancellor. Söder had explained the day before that the common goal was to replace the traffic light government; personnel matters only played a secondary role.
When he arrived in Augsburg, Merz was greeted with frenetic applause by the CSU party conference delegates. dpa
