Journalist Merval Pereira was elected president of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL) for the year 2022. He will replace poet, novelist and essayist Marco Lucchesi, who has held the presidency since 2018.
Merval became an academic in 2011 after succeeding Moacyr Scliar, who died in February of that year. He assumes the presidency on the next day 9. The inauguration ceremony, however, will only be held in March 2022.
Also elected, in a session yesterday (2), in Rio de Janeiro, were Nélida Piñon as general secretary, Joaquim Falcão, first secretary, Celso Lafer, second secretary, and Evaldo Cabral de Mello, treasurer.
