Electoral primaries in North American states and territories came to an end this Sunday (June 9); there were no opponents since March
The electoral previews for the United States presidential contest came to an end on Saturday (June 8, 2024). Traditional in the North American electoral calendar, the process was a mere formality from start to finish. Since March, the president Joe Biden and its predecessor, donald trumpthey didn’t even have real opponents in the race for the White House.
The Democratic caucuses have already started. This is because it is common in the USA for the current president to be reappointed by his party to run for re-election. With Biden it was no different. The Democrat won the primaries in all 50 states. He only lost in American Samoa, a North American overseas territory in Oceania – and is irrelevant in the dispute.
Trump’s life was a little (very little) more difficult. At the beginning of the campaign, he had in his rearview mirror the popular governor of Florida, the young Ron DeSantis, seen as the future of the party and an alternative to the faithful Trumpist wing. Then, former UN ambassador Nikki Haley rose as the main competitor. She went on to win the elections in Vermont and Washington DC And it stopped there.
Haley withdrew from the race after Super Tuesday (or Super 3rd, the most important day of the previews with countless states at stake). Before her, DeSantis had abandoned ship. Trumpism has proven to be unbeatable domestically. Not even the possible conviction (now confirmed) of the former president in the commercial fraud case was a threat.
The caucus system was created so that the 2 main parties in the USA, the Democrat and the Republican, nominate their candidates for a 1 X 1 dispute for the White House. The election is indirect and has a format similar to the presidential election. Casa Estado indicates a number of delegates proportional to the popular vote in the 50 states and territories. Whoever gets the majority wins.
Biden won 3,872 of the 3,934 delegates available in the Democratic clash. Trump obtained 2,231 of the 2,429.
The last step to formalize the 81-year-old Democrat and the 77-year-old Republican are the party conventions. It’s more of a formality. Biden and Trump will be the candidates on November 5th.
The Democratic National Convention is scheduled for August 19-22 in Chicago. The Republican will be from July 15th to 18th, in Milwaukee.
Before the Republican event, however, Donald Trump’s sentence comes out in the case of commercial fraud committed during the 2016 election campaign. The former president was found guilty on 34 charges by the Manhattan Court. The sentence can be 4 years for each article. However, Trump may receive parole.
Even in prison, Joe Biden’s opponent will be able to run. The United States Constitution does not prohibit this possibility. And if elected? There is still no answer. Justice does not have a device to prevent possession, but it is a scenario that has not yet been tested.
