Weight and aerodynamics Could they change the way we understand electric cars? Surely. Just look at the excellent results obtained by the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX in its latest test relating to autonomy, with an improvement in the data collected. The Mercedes test team took the car from Stuttgart to Silverstone, where it could be pushed harder on the circuit (but not beyond 140 per hour). At the end of the journey, the car clocked 1,202 kilometers, with a consumption of 8.3 kWh per hundred kilometers, at an average speed of 83 kilometers per hour. On the long stretches of the motorway, therefore, the EQXX would have demonstrated its aerodynamic qualities.
The data was provided by Mercedes itself, and should be taken accordingly with the springs: further independent tests will be needed to understand if these improvements can actually be transferred to cars with a more lively life, perhaps in the city or in the suburbs, and possibly abused by less experienced drivers than those used by the German brand. However it can certainly be agreed that aerodynamics are crucial to define the range of electric of the futureand the EQXX was developed substantially on this premise.
The journey began in Stuttgart, with several motorway sections to follow, and then diverted to Strasbourg. From there other fast sections accompanied the EQXX to Calais, where the Eurotunnel starts. Once restarted, the car entered the M25 motorway and stopped in Brackley, home of the F1 team with Hamilton and Russell. Another Mercedes driver, the Formula E champion Nyck De Vrieshe then got the driving of the electric car right at Silverstone, where he drove 11 laps at full speed and then ‘finished’ the battery in the pit lane of the British circuit.
Mercedes said the test was conclusive, due to the high temperatures along the way and the traffic encountered in Stuttgart and in the south-east of England. Total driving time was 14 hours and 30 minutes, with the air conditioning on for approximately eight hours.
