A little over a month from the start of the 2022 world championship, the Mercedes team momentarily loses one of its top men as the strategist James Vowles. The 42-year-old British engineer, in fact, announced his participation in theAsian Le Mans Series not as a strategist or manager, but as a real one pilot. Specifically, Vowles will be behind the wheel of the McLaren 720S of the Garage 59 team, with which he will take part in four overall events from 12 to 13 February and from 19 to February, respectively on the tracks of Dubai and Yas Marina, both in the United Arab Emirates. For the occasion, the Briton will be part of a team of pilots made up of Manuel Maldonado, cousin of the Venezuelan Pastor, and Nicolai Kjærgaard.
In anticipation of this new challenge, Vowles’ approach as a driver was commented on by Andrew Kirkaldyteam principal of Garage 59: “I am really happy with the driver line-ups that we have secured for the Asian Le Mans – has explained – we are all eager to get started with the McLaren 720S, and are hoping for our first win of the season. It will certainly also be useful to have one of the best F1 strategists in the team ”. At the end of this experience, Vowles will return regularly to Mercedes, where he will continue his assignment.
