Mercedes-Benz has announced the opening of new plant that will handle battery production in Bibb County, Alabama. The announcement comes a few months from the start of production of the EQ range cars also in the United States as part of the global electrification strategy that will involve most of the markets in which the Three-pointed Star operates. The new factory dedicated to accumulators to be built in the USA is thus fully inserted within the Mercedes global production network, thus confirming the German brand’s pole in Alabama as an export hub for luxury SUVs even in the electric age.
The European brand will also produce the EQS and EQE SUVs on the same site with batteries for the two models that will arrive from the new dedicated plant. “The opening of our new battery plant in Alabama is an important milestone on our path to the switch to electric – explained Ola Kallenius, CEO of Mercedes – With our comprehensive approach that includes a local cell procurement and recycling strategy, we underline the importance of the United States, where Mercedes-Benz has been successful for decades. We are proud to future-proof new jobs to build “Made in the USA” all-electric SUVs in a facility that has been such an established part of our manufacturing family for 25 years. ”
The Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama has been the three-pointed star large SUV manufacturing facility since 1997. Now the plant goes electric with the EQS SUV. Mercedes-Benz thus also offers a first glimpse of the spacious and progressive and highly digitized interior of the EQS SUV, ahead of the vehicle’s official world premiere on 19 April. The new battery factory will use a nearly 300-meter-long assembly line with 70 workstations. Using a fully digitized manufacturing process, a variety of components, including up to twelve cell modules and the so-called EE compartment, can be combined for intelligent integration of power electronics. The new Mercedes site will create 600 new jobs.
