Hamilton suggests his successor
The Mercedes seat 2025 – and who Toto Wolff will choose to fill it – remains the main topic of conversation from the perspective of pilot-market inside the Formula 1 paddock. In Suzuka, speaking to journalists, however, he himself also spoke out for the first time on the issue Lewis Hamiltonwho 'created' this vacant position by deciding to accept the Ferrari court for next season.
The seven-time world champion responded in particular to the rumors that his old friend-rival would – Sebastian Vettel – about to return to competition after his retirement at the end of 2022. Vettel was Hamilton's main antagonist in the 2017 and 2018 years, when the German was the spearhead of Ferrari which was trying to break – without success – the hegemony Mercedes.
Question of values
The hypothesis of a reversal of roles, with Vettel in Mercedes and him in Ferrari, seems to greatly fascinate the #44, who has never made a secret of appreciating the four-time German world champion also from a human point of view. “I would love for Seb to come back – Hamilton told journalists – And I think he would be an amazing option for the team. They would have a multiple world champion driver who has extraordinary values and who would continue to make the team progress“.
When asked who he would like Mercedes to hire, for example a rookie driver (like Andrea Kimi Antonelli) or someone with experience (perhaps Verstappen or Alonso), Hamilton replied by focusing more on 'off-piste' quality of the one who is to be his heir: “The only thing I really care about is that the team hires someone with integrity and values that align with the team and the direction the team is taking“, he ruled.
