Twenty five years ago Mercedes-Benz embarked on a new path with the model Actros, in particular for long-distance transport and distribution. Today we can say that the bet has been successful, because this vehicle has had the opportunity to reinvent itself several times, introducing various innovations that have contributed to changing the truck market.
The first generation, launched in 1996 to celebrate the 100th birthday of the truck invented by Gottlieb Daimler in 1896, marked the beginning of a model series that to this day is at the forefront of its market segment. “The Actros has been the flagship of our product range for a quarter of a century“Said Andreas von Wallfeld, head of marketing, sales and services at Mercedes-Benz Trucks. “Over 1.4 million trucks sold worldwide in this premium model series are clear proof of customer satisfaction“.
Since 1996, each Actros generation has had several innovations in terms of safety, fuel consumption, networking and comfort. The Actros 1 was distinguished by the electronic braking system (EBS), the fully automated gearbox, a CAN bus and a megaspace cab with flat floor. In the Actros 2, highlights included adaptive cruise control, Active Brake Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Powershift transmission and a new stowage concept. The Actros 3 had features such as the light and rain sensor and the further developed Active Brake Assist emergency braking system. The Actros 4 model introduced Euro 6 engines, Predictive Powertrain Control cruise control and pedestrian detection.
The Actros 5, available since 2018, it has had several world premieres to offer. With Active Drive Assist (ADA), the world’s first assistance system for semi-automatic driving (Level 2) went into series production. ADA actively assists the driver under certain conditions with the longitudinal and lateral guidance of the truck and can automatically maintain distance to the vehicle in front, accelerate and even steer if the necessary system conditions such as sufficient turning radius or clearly visible road markings are met. Even greater protection for pedestrians is provided by Active Brake Assist 5, the emergency braking system capable of applying maximum full braking in response to people on the move. In addition, the exterior mirrors were removed from a truck for the first time. The new Actros also comes with the so-called MirrorCam as standard.
The electric model finally arrived in 2021 eActros, which he introduced Mercedes trucks in a new technological era.
