Portugal will be this year the focus of the expansion of The largest Spanish supermarket chain, Mercadona. Juan Roig’s distribution company plans to maintain its investment in new establishments with the opening of ten stores throughout 2025, with which will expand its presence to the 70 points of sale in the neighboring country.
Since Mercadona opened its first supermarket in Portugal in 2019, the Spanish chain has added a total of 60 stores in that marketin addition to two logistics blocks located in Póvoa de Varzim and Almeirim. The Portuguese subsidiary of the Spanish group has already achieved benefits for the first time in 2023.
Among the new establishments that Juan Roig’s company provides for this year is the first opening in the capital of the country, Lisbon, which is a new jump in the Portuguese market. Mercadona plans to open two stores in the capital. One of them will be in Alta de Lisbon, where too will install a corporate office which will complement the one that has already been open in Vila Nova de Gaia since 2020, and in which the company has its headquarters in Portugal. The second store will be located in Quinta do Lambert, in lumiar.
The rest of the stores will open in the populations of Loures (Santa Iria de Azóia and Frielas), Penafiel (Milhundos), Fafe, Leiria (Vale Sepal), Matosinhos (São Gens), Palmela and Porto (Amial). The first of them will begin in March, in Santa Iria de Azóia, the first in the municipality of Loures.

In just a few years Mercadona has become 7,000 employees In Portugal, of which 1,700 joined the company in 2024. To fulfill its expansion plan by 2025, the company indicates that it is already hiring new staff to cover several positions.
The company has recently announced an increase of 8.5%, to all its workers in the country since January 2025, which places its entry salary in 14,963.90 euros gross per yearwith salary progression until 20,465.10 euros, in a maximum of 4 years. To this we must add the daily feeding subsidy and the Sundays and holidays. Likewise, when the company and individual objectives are achieved, an annual premium is also added that, from the first year of seniority, is equivalent to an extra salary and, once exceeded 4 years in the company, to two extra salaries .
According to Mercadona, a new salary table of the company offers an initial salary that is a 23 % above the national minimum wage.
