Mercadona, a company of physical supermarkets and online sales, has donated more than 17,000 tons of products in 2020 to soup kitchens, food banks and other charities in Spain and Portugal. This amount means an 84% increase in the contributions of food and other products to social entities compared to the previous year as a result of the current health and economic crisis.
These donations are the equivalent of more than 283,000 shopping carts and are made through collaboration with more than 290 soup kitchens, more than 60 food banks and other social entities and charities in both Spain and Portugal where the Mercadona company is present.
The company also showed its broad support with additional donations throughout the year, such as the deliveries made in March and April to the field hospital set up at the Ifema Fair in Madrid.
The campaign is supported by collaboration with more than 290 soup kitchens and more than 60 food banks
Also the ‘Chiefs’ (clients) have collaborated in this campaign with the donation of 3,800 tons, which is equivalent to more than 63,000 cars, in the different kilo operations that have been carried out throughout the year.
One of the commitments that Mercadona maintains with society is to return part of what it receives from it. With this objective in mind, the company’s Social Responsibility Plan is developed, which addresses the social and ethical component through different sustainable lines of action that reinforce its commitment to shared growth and which it achieves with great efficiency.
Along with donating food, Mercadona collaborates with 32 foundations and occupational centers in the decoration of their stores with trencadís murals, made by more than 1,000 people with intellectual disabilities.
Another strategic line of Mercadona’s Social Responsibility Plan is sustainability. For this, the company has its own Environmental Management System, based on the principles of the circular economy and focused on logistics optimization, energy efficiency, waste management, sustainable production and plastic reduction.
The ‘Bosses’ (clients) joined the initiative in the different operations carried out over the past year
In this sense, Mercadona, together with its Totaler suppliers, is working on another initiative with the ‘Strategy 6.25’ to achieve a triple objective by 2025: reduce plastic by 25%, that all packaging made of this material are recyclable, and recycle all plastic residue. In addition, it works on the Sustainable Urban Distribution Project and on the improvement of air quality in our cities through trucks and vans powered by cleaner and more efficient technologies.
Since 2011, it has been a member of the United Nations Global Compact for the defense of fundamental values in human rights, labor standards, the environment and the fight against corruption.
