Memphis Depay began the season as a shot, generating a certain illusion among the culé fans who tried to place all their hopes on a player who a few months ago they did not want to see on the team. The marches of Antoine Griezmann and Leo Messi, together with Ansu Fati’s injury, forced the Camp Nou stands to get excited about the Dutchman.
Several months later, despite the fact that his scoring figures are not bad at all, he has shown that he may not be a forward for this team. He has flashes of genius in which he ends up scoring a goal, but then he takes full games without hitting a single dribble or defining correctly.
If he had not scored the final goal against Villarreal, we would be talking about a regrettable match, as it also happened on the day of Rayo Vallecano, where the Dutchman missed chances of all colors. That day he even missed a penalty.
It seems that despite the fact that he is a footballer with a lot of personality, this process of restructuring Barça has been great for him. He did not expect to be the star of a team as great as Barcelona, and being the star in these circumstances should not be easy.
Even so, everyone is looking forward to seeing him share the lead with Ansu Fati and Ousmane Dembélé, who until then have not been able to coincide practically simultaneously on the pitch except for 20 minutes in Kiev.
He still has opportunities to succeed in this team, and surely he can turn the tables and get the fans to see him as a star again, because at this point a large part of the Catalans have tired of defending the indefensible.
