A large-scale and abstract work celebrating Mauno Koivisto’s life’s work was announced in Helsinki.
President Mauno Koiviston Appellant– named monument was unveiled in Pikkuparlamenti park in Helsinki.
On Saturday, one hundred years have passed since the birth of Koivisto.
The event, which starts at 5 p.m., was opened by the prime minister Petteri Orpoafter which the President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö uttered the sculpture’s unveiling words.
Koivisto’s spouse was also there Tellervo Koivisto.
Six meters high and fifteen meters long, the work was designed and executed by a sculptor Kirsi Kaulanenwhich won the open memorial competition organized by the Government Chancellery in 2021.
Made of stainless steel, the monument is lit by four columns and fourteen lamps embedded in the ground. The lighting design was done by him Sara Leino in collaboration with the sculptor.
The large work is built on both sides of the central corridor of the park, and it is possible to walk through it.
The Prime Minister’s Office honors the president’s memory and great life’s work with a monument.
