Memoir Jukka Okko 1943–2022

Vice judgeAdviser to the Rapporteur Jukka Okko died at the age of 78 on 15 January 2022 in Helsinki. He was born in Helsinki on April 20, 1943.

Okko started his schooling at Kaisaniemi Elementary School. He enrolled as a student in 1962 at Käpylä Co-educational School.

Okko read a lot from a young age. In the first grades of school, he amazed his classmates with the Latin phrases he used.. History and poems in particular were his favorite readings.

Okko completed his bachelor’s degree in law in 1967, the rank of deputy judge in 1972. As a namesake, he also served in Kärkölä, Karkkila and Vihti, and in Karkkila as the chairman of the city law. At the Police Department of the Ministry of the Interior, Okko was acting. as an inspector 1974–1976 and acting. as Chief Inspector 1977-1978. He held the position of Helsinki City Champion in 1979.

Okko joined the Office of the Chancellor of Justice in 1980, first as Senior Secretary to the Chancellor of Justice and from 1991 as Senior Adviser to the Rapporteur. He was responsible for monitoring the legality of police and prosecutorial posts.

Among the numerous cases investigated by Oko in his career, mention should be made, for example, of the highly publicized Jakomäki – Mikkeli hostage episode in August 1986, in the aftermath of which Okko investigated further complaints to the Chancellor of Justice.

In connection with the reform of the Prosecutor’s Office in 1997, Okko remained in the Office of the Chancellor of Justice in the Judicial Review Department, where he examined and supervised lower court judgments. He retired in 2005.

Co-workers According to Okko, he was, in a good sense, an official of the old people, a respected, reliable, accurate and conscientious employee in his work, who diligently devoted himself to his duties. He managed the things he handled well. He was modest in nature and did not bring himself out. Still, he was a great companion. Because of his extensive civilization, he was able to talk sovereignly about any subject.

In Karkkila in the 1970s, Okko was invited to a Rotary club, in which he was actively involved for several years.

In antique shops Okko was a familiar customer who also read and acquired foreign language literature. When traveling in Spain and Estonia, for example, he used the local language. In the early 1990s, he worked for his job with the Estonian Chancellor of Justice.

In addition to literature, his interests included numismatics, music, and art.

As a human being, he was kind and benevolent. He had a restrained, good sense of humor and was adept as a narrator and speaker.
