At home they already call him “The Spanish Rovanperä” and it might seem a rather daring comparison, since it is a comparison between a boy of just thirteen and a son of a driver who races in the World Rally Championship. Yet the traits in common between the adolescent Gil Membrado and the Finn from Toyota, who is seven years older and already thirty races under his belt, are there for all to see, fans and professionals. Same precocious talent, same mastery of the mechanical means: merit, in the case of the very young driver born in Olost, a village of less than 1,200 souls in the heart of Catalonia, of a family passion (dad Josep has been the Catalan champion of the specialty several times) and hard training on the karting campus of Fernando Alonso.
WRC | Safari, Ogier triumphs
A mix of talent and passion cultivated for a long time away from the spotlight, on the lawn of the home garden, and that this weekend will finally be able to compete in a real race, in a country where age is not a binding parameter. By virtue of a special permit obtained from the Latvian federation, which also allows very young people to compete as long as they are navigated by a co-driver with a license to be able to drive in transfers between one stage and another on the roads open to traffic, Membrado will run on Rally of Latvia, stage valid for the European Championship. The Spanish talent will share the cockpit of one Peugeot 208 Rally4 with the most expert Rogelio Peñate, 42 years old and 340 rallies in twenty years of career. In short, the right man to accompany the first steps of a small champion among the greats of the rally.
