Members of the Bundestag arrived in Taiwan to express solidarity with the local authorities. This was announced on Sunday, October 1, by the German TV channel ARD.
The delegation included six representatives of each party. The event was chaired by Klaus-Peter Wilsch, Chairman of the Parliamentary Group in charge of liaison with Taiwan.
As German Social Democratic MP Katrin Budd stressed, such a gesture of support is especially important at a time of escalation between Taipei and Beijing.
It is noted that the trip is not connected with the visit of the speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.
Earlier, on August 2, German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock said that Germany would support Taiwan in the event of a possible attack by China. Burbock pointed out that Germany does not accept situations where international law is violated and a larger neighbor attacks its smaller neighbor, which, in her opinion, applies to China as well.
In response, China urged Burbock to be careful with his statements and uphold the “one China” principle.
On August 5, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, at a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Phnom Penh, said that the trip of Speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan would result in serious consequences for the United States, calling the incident a “vulgar comedy.” The diplomat noted that Beijing would be forced to respond harshly.
As Lavrov pointed out on August 3, with Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, the United States is trying to prove to the whole world that it is impunity.
Pelosi arrived on the island on August 2 and called her visit “a testament to the US commitment to supporting Taiwanese democracy.” This is the first official visit to Taiwan by a speaker of the US House of Representatives in 25 years. China strongly protested the US and promised retaliatory measures.
Taiwan is part of China, but has been living as an independent state for many decades. The United States claims that it does not dispute the ownership of the island by China, while providing support to the Taiwanese authorities.
Official relations between the PRC government and its island province broke off in 1949, contacts resumed in the late 1980s.
