Meloni, first public issue after the vote: “Italy must return to defend its interests”
“Italy must return to the defense of its interest to find common solutions”. This was stated by Giorgia Meloni, in her first public outing after her victory in the political elections.
“Reading the newspapers today, many will have understood that when we said that in Europe we start from the defense of national interests to arrive at common solutions, we did not do it because we were populists, but because we were lucid”, highlighted Meloni, speaking at a demonstration of Coldiretti in Milan. “The goal is to return an industrial strategy to this nation that hasn’t had it for some time,” she added.
The future premier said she had “chosen to limit public outings” to “dedicate myself body and soul to addressing the most urgent dossiers”. “If we are called to govern this nation, it is clear from the start that we plan to give effective and immediate answers to the main problems,” said the president of the Brothers of Italy, who emphasized expensive energy. “We are in constant contact with the outgoing government, which is engaged in a very complex negotiation at the European level”, she said, recalling that any solution “will have an impact on energy costs in a few months”.
“The work that must be done in these hours is to understand how we can in the meantime intervene on the energy costs of this autumn, we cannot afford to go on as in recent months. I think this is the primary responsibility of the future government and we are committed to working on this ”.
In his speech at the Coldiretti village, at Parco Sempione in Milan, Meloni promised that “the intermediate bodies” will also be involved. “We will not do it alone,” said the center-right leader, who reiterated the importance of “food sovereignty”. “Politics must have the common sense to listen and decide, but also the humility to ask those who experience issues on a daily basis what the solutions can be. On this too, a different relationship can be built between institutions and citizens ”.
Meloni also focused on her meeting this morning with Silvio Berlusconi, in the midst of negotiations to form the new government. “It was a very cordial and very constructive meeting. I’m optimistic, ”said Meloni. According to a joint note, the two leaders discussed the next institutional steps in view of the convening of the next parliament and “shared the need for Italy to need a high-profile government, capable of dealing with the serious emergencies that the country is in front of it ”. Meloni and Berlusconi also investigated the most urgent dossiers on the agenda, “starting with expensive energy”.
