Elections in France
Seven out of ten young people abstained in the first round
Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the union of left-wing parties (Nupes), is trying these days to mobilize young French people to vote this Sunday in the French legislative elections, after seven out of ten young people voted in the first round. abstain.
“Move, my friend. Move a little. Do more than just whimper or stay home doing nothing. What do you want? The return of the reactionaries? », He asked the young Mélenchon through the TMC television network.
The leftist leader urged young French people to “mind their own business a bit” and go vote. “Parcoursup (the university admissions platform) is not worth complaining about, if you don’t vote for those who want to abolish it,” Mélenchon said. The suppression of Parcoursup, a platform highly criticized by students and parents, is one of the electoral promises of the union of the left.
Seven out of ten young people did not vote in the first round of the legislative elections, held on June 12. 69% of young French people between 18 and 24 years old did not go to the polls, according to a survey by Ipsos-Sopra Steria. Abstention reached 71% of the French between 25 and 34 years.
In the first round, the young people who voted opted for the left. 42% of young people between 18 and 24 years old voted for Nupes, according to a survey by Ipsos Sopra-Steria for France Télévisions and Radio France. 18% of young people preferred Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Regroupment party. 13% cast their vote for Ensemble, the coalition of President Emmanuel Macron’s party and his allies. And 10% supported Los Republicanos (moderate right) and 5% Reconquista of ultra Éric Zemmour.
The leader of the New Popular, Ecological and Social Union (Nupes), very active on social networks, knows that the young vote can be key in these elections, in which the 577 seats in the lower house of the French Parliament are renewed.
Emergency plan for young people
To try to seduce this electorate, Nupes has presented “an emergency plan for young people.” This plan includes, in addition to the suppression of Parcoursup, measures to fight climate change and the promise of a subsidy of 1,063 euros for all young people, if the left achieves an absolute majority in the National Assembly.
Mélenchon, who despite being 70 years old has a lot of pull among young people, managed to unite the leftist parties for the legislative elections, something that seemed impossible a few months ago. This is how Nupes was born, which brings together candidates from La France Insumisa, the Socialist Party, the Communist Party and Europe Ecology-The Greens (EELV).
The Nupes leader dreams of being named prime minister by centrist President Emmanuel Macron if the left wins a majority of seats in the National Assembly. Mélenchon wants to force cohabitation, forced coexistence between a president and a prime minister of different political persuasion.
The polling institutes do not expect it. But Macron’s party and his allies could lose the absolute majority and be forced to agree with the moderate right to carry out their reforms. Mélenchon is confident that young people will vote en masse for the left and make a difference in these elections.
