Former US First Lady Melania Trump (Novo Mesto, Slovenia, 54) says she is proud to have posed nude for photographs when she was a model and reminds those who criticise her for doing so that the “celebration of beauty” is part of the culture. “We should honour our bodies and embrace the timeless tradition of using art as a powerful means of self-expression,” said the wife of Donald Trump (New York, 78), who was US president from 2017 to 2021 and is seeking election to the White House for the third time in November. A video posted on his X account this Wednesday, September 18, to promote the memoir that will be published in October.
“Can we no longer appreciate the beauty of the human body? Throughout history, great artists have revered the human form, evoking deep emotion and admiration,” reflects Melania Trump on the social network where he has 2.8 million followers. While his voice in off asks these questions, the video shows images of various Renaissance works of art as examples of naked bodies, including Michelangelo’s David, The big bathers by Paul Cézanne or Lady Godivaby John Collier. However, he preferred not to bring up his own photos again in that video.
The former Slovenian model thus criticises the media uproar that is still being caused by the photographs in which she posed without clothes in the late 1990s and early 2000s during her time as a model. Following this new video, The news channel CNN has recalled that during Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, nude photographs of his wife taken in 1995, then published in a now-defunct French men’s magazine, were used to criticize the Republican candidate. In 2000, five years before she married Donald Trump, the British magazine GQ also published a cover in which Melania Knauss (her maiden name) appeared naked on Trump’s plane.
The former first lady’s upcoming memoirs, titled Melania which go on sale on October 1, still in the midst of the electoral campaign. They are “a powerful and inspiring story of a woman who has forged her own path, overcoming adversity and defining her personal excellence,” according to the independent American publisher Skyhorse Publishing, which publishes them. “Melania reflects on her childhood in Slovenia, the defining moments that led her to the world of high fashion in Europe and New York, and the chance meeting with Donald Trump that forever changed the course of her life. Melania speaks openly about her courtship, her life in the spotlight, and the joys of being a mother. She shares behind-the-scenes stories from her time in the White House, shedding light on her advocacy work and the causes close to her heart,” says a text from the publisher.
Melania was born in Slovenia in 1970 and became a model at the age of 16. She met Trump in Manhattan in 1998 and married him seven years later. They have one son together, Barron, 18. Donald Trump’s two previous marriages were also to models: Ivana Zelníčková, with whom he had three children (Ivanka, 42, Donald Jr., 46, and Eric, 40) – who died in July 2022 – and Marla Maples, mother of his daughter Tiffany (30).
For now, Melania Trump has rarely joined her husband on the campaign trail, making an appearance alongside him on stage on the final day of the Republican National Convention in July. She also rarely speaks out about politics, but has become increasingly outspoken in recent weeks, coinciding with the imminent publication of her memoirs. Before defending her nude photos, for example, she shared a video also on her X account questioning the law enforcement response to the first assassination attempt against Trump last July – there was a second attempt on September 15. “I can’t help but wonder why law enforcement didn’t stop the shooter before the speech,” she said on camera. in a video posted on September 10.
