Washington.- Former American first lady Melania Trump supports the right to abortion, she said in her autobiography that will be published on Tuesday, according to The Guardian, an unexpected position on a relevant issue in the presidential elections in which her husband is running.
Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to determine what she does with her own body? A woman’s fundamental right to individual freedom, to her own life, gives her the authority to terminate her pregnancy if she so wishes,” Melania writes, according to the newspaper.
“Restricting a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body. “I have thought about it my entire adult life,” she added, according to The Guardian, which said it had accessed a copy of the memoirs.
The campaign team of Vice President Kamala Harris, Donald Trump’s rival in the November 5 elections, reacted.
“Sadly for women across America, Melania’s husband strongly disagrees with her and is the reason why more than one in three American women live under a Trump abortion ban that threatens their health, freedom and their lives,” said team spokesperson Sarafina Chitika.
In a black and white video posted this Thursday on social media, Melania Trump appears evasive.
“Individual freedom is a fundamental principle that I protect. “There is certainly no room for compromise when it comes to this essential right that all women have from birth,” she said.
onald Trump presumes that the appointment of three conservative judges to the Supreme Court contributed to annulling the federal right to abortion in 2022.
At least 20 states have since imposed full or partial restrictions, with Georgia banning most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.
Melania Trump’s comments sparked the ire of anti-abortionists.
Their support for abortion “is anti-feminist” and contrary to the “Catholic faith,” Kristan Hawkins, President of Students for Life, stated on the social network X.
As public opinion is largely in favor of abortion rights, Donald Trump has somewhat adjusted his position and is now trying to present himself as a defender of “reproductive rights.”
Harris campaigns in defense of abortion rights and, according to polls, voters trust her more on this issue.
Before Melania Trump, other wives of former Republican presidents have spoken out in favor of abortion rights, including Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush and Laura Bush, but they did so long after their husbands left the White House.
Trump softens anti-immigrant laws
The British newspaper also points out that Melania Trump claims in her memoirs that she forced Trump to abandon his immigration policy of separating children from their parents.
“This has to stop,” the former First Lady’s book notes, recalling what she told her husband, “emphasizing the trauma it was causing these families.”
Melania claims that Trump kept his word and ended the policy on June 20, 2018.
