The first part of this long and unprecedented weekend ends with a smile Ferrari. Charles Leclerc in fact he managed to snatch a splendid fourth position on the grid for tomorrow’s Sprint Qualifying. A surprise result, which even placed him in front of Sergio Perez’s Red Bull. Less positive on Friday’s Carlos Sainz, able to precede Leclerc in Q1 and Q2 but then forced to a disappointing ninth place. The Ferrari director analyzed everything that happened on the track Laurent Mekies.
Leclerc: “I like the new format”
“The work of Charles and his team in qualifying was excellent – commented the French executive to the microphones of Sky Sport F1 – with the group close together and less time to prepare, he worked hard during qualifying. There were so many details to fix in the car. He worked a lot, given the few data this morning. It was a work session, in which in the end he had a great lap. The fourth place is deserved for the quality of this work. Too bad for Carlos – added Mekies – it had the same speed, but for a few tenths and is on the other side of the center-group. But the work done was good“.
2021 British GP Sprint Qualification: the starting grid
Inevitably, however, the focus is entirely on the two races to be faced between tomorrow and Sunday. Mekies, analyzed in particular the Sprint qualification, did not rule out surprises at a strategic level: “The real challenge will be on the races of tomorrow and Sunday rather than on the single lap. Strategy ahead of tomorrow? It is not obvious that everyone starts with the soft – warned the red ds – we’ll find out together tomorrow. There is a lot of analytical work to be done and a lot of work planned for tomorrow morning, with a session dedicated only to that. The work isn’t done today. We have to work hard to optimize the machine and make the right choices “.
