For the first time this season, no Scuderia Ferrari driver has managed to access the final part of qualifying valid for the Austrian Grand Prix. In fact, a few thousandths were missing at the end of Q2, respectively six and forty-seven, a Carlos Sainz (11th) it’s at Charles Leclerc (12th) to enter the top ten. The natural disappointment with the result must also be balanced with the awareness that freedom in choosing the tires with which to start the race could play an important role in terms of strategy tomorrow, when points are awarded. The final verdict on this ninth round of the season will therefore only be at the checkered flag.
Leclerc: “I expected the cut, but not behind Russell”
“Obviously we cannot be satisfied with not being able to bring any rider to Q3 – declared the racing director Laurent Mekies – but never before has the result of qualifying been interpreted as a function of the race. In fact, with these placings we will have the possibility to choose the type of tires to start with, which should prove to be an advantage over those in front of us on the grid who will have to start on the Soft. Precisely based on this reasoning we chose to try to pass the Q2 cut with the Mediums, a goal missed by a hair at the end of a session in which nine riders were enclosed in less than two tenths with many of them using the softer compound. Now we need to focus on preparing for a race in which the strategy and performance of the various types of tires will play a decisive role.“.
