Qualifying for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix showed a good one Ferrari, with Carlos Sainz able to overtake his team mate in view of the Sprint Qualifying on Saturday. The Spaniard, in fact, managed to finish the session in sixth place on the grid, putting himself behind him Charles Leclerc, therefore arrived seventh. A result that allows the Maranello house to outpace the two McLarens – who finished 8th and 9th – necessary to be able to extend the constructors’ standings on the English team.
Regardless of what happens in the rest of the Brazilian weekend, there was no shortage of words Laurent Mekies, Sporting Director of the red, who thus commented on what the Scuderia had achieved at the end of qualifying on Friday, the third and last of this season characterized by the introduction of this new format: “A discreet qualification, functional to achieving the goal we set ourselves for this season finale – commented the French engineer – that is to say to conquer the third place in the Constructors’ classification. Today it was important to be with both cars ahead of our direct rivals and we succeeded. Of course, we would also have liked to be ahead of Gasly’s AlphaTauri but we knew that on this track, as they had been in Mexico, they would be very competitive ”.
“Behind the two top teams there is always a great balance and it takes very little to lose or gain important positions. Today we paid with Charles for not being able to have two sets of new Softs like all the other Q3 qualifiers, as he was forced to use an extra one in Q1: it is also details like these that make the difference when the gaps are minimum.
In the end, I would like to congratulate the whole team for how he has worked in these last two days: it was not easy to condense the set-up and preparation work into 14 hours which, normally, is spread over two days, but each one carried out his task with great commitment and organization, making sure that today everything went smoothly as if it were a day of ordinary administration “.
