ANDDeportivo Independiente Medellín (DIM) will face Argentine Lanús on Wednesday in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana quarter-finals (7:30 pm, Directv TV).
According to the criteria of
The Colombian team, led by Alejandro Restrepo, who presented an alternative team in Saturday’s match for the local championship, arrives at this match without the Uruguayan defender Joaquín Varela, author of the two goals in the 2-2 draw against Palestino in Chile and who suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last week.
The ‘Poderoso de la Montaña’ could also suffer the loss of two other key players: defender José Ortiz and midfielder Diego Moreno. Thus, the backbone of the team will be goalkeeper Éder Chaux; centre-backs José Aja and Fainer Torijano, midfielder Jaime Alvarado and striker Luis Sandoval.
Lanús’ time to face Medellín
For its part, Lanús, far behind in the Argentine tournament, will seek a new feat in the Sudamericana, of which it was champion in 2013 and runner-up in 2020.
Ricardo Zielinski’s team is coming off of eliminating the reigning champion, Liga de Quito, in the round of 16, a rival they defeated in both Argentina and Ecuador.
The team’s current situation is different; however, in the Argentine Professional League tournament, where it has recorded four draws and one loss in the last five matches, it is ranked 13th in the standings.
Their last match was a 1-1 draw at home against Unión thanks to a goal from their top scorer, Walter Bou.
Lanús will not be able to count on striker Eduardo Salvio, formerly of Benfica and Atlético de Madrid, who is recovering from an injury and is also in doubt for the return match in Colombia.
