Four weeks after the election, the newly elected state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania re-elected SPD member Birgit Hesse as its president.
Schwerin – Hesse received 59 of the 79 votes cast in the constituent session of parliament on Tuesday in Schwerin. Nine MPs voted against them and eleven abstained. The 46-year-old Hesse has held the office since 2019. She was previously the state’s education minister.
The constituent meeting was opened by the elder Horst Förster (AfD). At 79, the MP is the oldest member of Parliament. However, the state parliament changed its rules of procedure immediately afterwards. Accordingly, the constituent session will in future be opened by the MP who has been a member of the state parliament for the longest time. The state parliament thus adopted a regulation that the Bundestag had already made for itself in 2017.
