Although it will take all the skill and technical ability of this world to set a new record in the Goodwood climb, the McMurtry Speirling she can already say she’s back to being talked about. The 1014 horsepower car, resembling a pocket Batmobile, was driven by former F1 Max Chilton at the 2022 Festival of Speed, once again demonstrating exceptional acceleration values. By the end of the event (June 26) the car will attempt to break the official British track recordsigned by Romain Dumas, aboard a Volkswagen ID.R in 2019. That car turned in 39.9 seconds.
McMurtry Speirling, which could be jokingly called spelling since the name sounds like a tongue twister, mounts a fan that generates double the weight of the car itself, in order to keep it glued to the ground. The style recalls that of Gordon Murray’s Formula 1 Brabham BT46B. Thanks to a pair of electric motors on the rear axle, it can reach a maximum speed of 240 kilometers per hour, while having the burning acceleration as a weapon in its pocket: from zero to one hundred hours in 1.5 seconds. The prototype has a specific power of one horse per kilo. They’ve been developing it for about six years, and it already debuted at Goodwood in 2021.
The bodywork is made entirely of carbon fiber, with space for the pilot alone and spartan instrumentation. However, despite being an electric car, a manual gearbox can be found. The wing trim is adjustable from the cockpit. The car also features two turbines of 80 horsepower each, capable of generating its particular sound, peaking at 120 decibels. In short, a kind of jet, but with a 60 kW battery and an 800 V electrical system.
The company that builds this car was created by Irishman Sir David McMurtry. His team is made up of engineers with experience in Formula 1 and the high-performance road car industry.
