“The business got the better of the merit”. Alexander Rossi, Indycar driver who has long breathed the atmosphere of the ‘European’ F1 paddock between GP2 and his debut with Manor Marussia in the Circus, has strongly attacked the decision by the FIA not to grant any discount to Colton Herta in order to make his debut in F1 at the wheel of the AlphaTauri in 2023. Helmut Marko would have gladly given space to the 2000 class in 2023 by citing force majeure – the pandemic – as justification for not obtaining the 40 points required to achieve this requirement. The FIA, however, did not want to create a dangerous precedent also to defend its credibility and the training path represented by F3 and F2. Herta will therefore not race in F1 next season and Rossi has precisely emphasized that the defense by the F1 paddock of the ‘business’ guaranteed by the young drivers and the preparatory championships were dynamics that prevailed over the talent of Colton Herta, who has already won seven Indycar races in his career. In the US top flight, veteran Will Power won the title, who got the better of Penske boxmates Scott McLaughlin and Josef Newgarden as well as the Ganassi trident formed by Alex Palou, Scott Dixon and Marcus Ericsson. McLaughlin used the Herta theme to emphasize on Twitter that he and Newgarden, in case, have the points to obtain the Super license thanks to the sporting results obtained in recent seasons.
