Change at the top
The much feared overtaking has finally arrived, at least in the Constructors’ standings. After having also been at 115 points behind the top of the league After the Miami GP, McLaren completed a sensational comeback in Baku, taking the lead at the top of the constructors’ standings with a 20-point lead over reigning champions Red Bull.
An unpredictable handover at the beginning of the year but instead absolutely predictable in recent weeks, when the impressive growth in performance of McLaren was counterbalanced by a an even more steep collapse in terms of results by the Austrian team.
Max in trouble
Evidence of this negative period is the results collected by Max Verstappen in the last two GPsin Monza and Baku. The fifth and sixth places obtained by the three-time world champion are the two worst results in consecutive races for him since the 2021 season, when in the middle of the championship he was the victim of the contact with Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone and then finished ninth in the Hungarian GP, also due to an accident at the start. This time, however, the negative result is entirely attributable to him and the performance of the RB20.
In search of redemption
Despite the decidedly negative trend, however, Verstappen doesn’t want to throw in the towel in the race for the teams’ title: “McLaren leading the standings? It’s never nice to see – acknowledged the Dutchman speaking to journalists after the Baku GP – but the battle is not over yet. We will try to take back the top”.
However, the Singapore round certainly does not favour Red Bull in terms of layout. The Marina Bay track is also the only one on the current calendar where Max has never won.: “What to do in Singapore? We are trying to optimise the set-up to understand what we did wrong here. I don’t think it will be our best track, of course, but we will see. It could surprise us.”concluded Verstappen.
