The Formula 1 championship saw the McLaren return to the top step of the podium on the occasion of the Italian Grand Prix, with the English team that has stopped the fast of victories that had lasted for nine years in the Circus. Now, like all the other teams, the Grove team looks to 2022 and the new technical regulation that will be introduced, but the future of the British house is not focused only on Formula 1.
In fact, after having formalized the entry into Extreme E for next season, the CEO of the team, Zak Brown, had announced the intention to extend the presence of the team in other first-tier categories, together with the commitments already underway in F1 and Indycar. Specifically, McLaren is considering an entry into the WEC and in Formula E. With the latter, moreover, the team had already signed an agreement, in January, which ensured participation for the 2022/23 season, but any decisions for the championship that will be made only in the early next year, as confirmed by Brown himself: “We only have a couple of weeks left now – commented Brown in an interview reported by gpfans.com – and therefore I believe it is realistic to make a choice in early 2022, which is also more convenient from a technical point of view. We have postponed the decisions to allow us an adequate technical preparation for both categories, which takes time ”.
Also with regard to the WEC, McLaren preferred to postpone official and definitive decisions, especially thanks to the new regulations introduced for the Hypercar and LMDh categories, which attracted the interest of various manufacturers: “The reason that prompted us to extend the time on our steps – Brown added – is that we are unable to make a decision yet. It must make sense too from a commercial point of view, considering that we already have teams in IndyCar and Extreme E. In the latter we have already completed the first tests, while in the first we are preparing for a third car for 2023. However – he concluded – in early 2022 we will come to a conclusion about everything“.
