Even more than in the past, this year’s winter tests are very difficult to interpret to outline a first scale of values on the track. The new technical regulations have upset all certainties and the 2022 single-seaters need a lot of work to be understood and squeezed properly to get maximum performance. Many seem to be hiding, but many teams – including Mercedes and Red Bull – have indicated Ferrari as the car more on the ball seen so far between Barcelona and Sakhir.
In Maranello they obviously try to minimize, talking about strategy on the part of their rivals to unload all the pressure on them in view of the first round of the season, but in any case the F1-75 seems to have been born under a lucky star. Lap times, however, must not be deceiving: Carlos Sainz himself, in fact, underlined how it should be pay much more attention to GPS data than to chronometric performancewho yesterday actually saw Magnussen’s Haas in front of everyone.
But why is GPS important? “From here we understand the way in which the power unit is traveling, analyzing the speed profiles (which indicate the torque) and the maximum speeds. If the curve is sudden you are using power, otherwise it means that you are going into a sort of ‘diesel mode’ – explained the engineer Luigi Mazzola to The Gazzetta dello Sport – I don’t think the teams are hiding, in reality everyone is trying to understand. That’s why I see a Ferrari that is more ready in some respects, more aware of what it has in its hand. The others, on the other hand, are a little further behind. The new regulation totally changes the way the car is set up and interpreted because the aerodynamics have totally changed and are no longer so constant according to the surface. If you take the aerodynamics off the wings and move it to the bottom, you make it dependent on height and speed. The pilot has to understand what happens and if you add the porpoising effect you end up in confusion. It seems to me the case of Mercedes ”.
So, for the former Cavallino engineer, it’s not a gamble to say that Ferrari has a good chance of being there to fight: “I’m just saying that the Red is the most ready, but the Red Bull is also in place. Mercedes is a little more in troublebut you can’t bet on performance yet ”.
