Mazón’s first dismissal: he dismisses Minister Nuria Montes and appoints Marián Cano as head of Industry

The president of the Generalitat Valenciana, the popular Carloz Mazón, is gradually remodeling his Consell. If on Sunday afternoon he announced that the spokesperson for the Executive would become vice president Susana Camarero, this Monday he announced the dismissal of the Minister of Tourism and Industry, Núria Montes.

Formally, no administrative act has taken place, or it does not appear in the Official Gazette of the Generalitat Valenciana. The Communication Cabinet has sent a statement in which it informs that the new minister responsible for industry will be Marián Cano, president of the footwear association, who already attended the European elections with the PP, without obtaining a seat.

Montes was strongly questioned for her statements in relation to the ‘morgue’ at Feria Valencia. The former leader said: “Bodies will not be delivered to families here, family members will not be allowed access” and apologized shortly after. After these unfortunate statements that earned him constant criticism, the Valencian president has dispensed with her, in what has been his first dismissal from the Consell since the climate crisis. The Minister of Justice, Salomé Pradas, competent in emergencies, and the most notable for her management, is still in office, although it is foreseeable that she will be the next to leave the regional Executive.

The president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, this Monday called on Mazón to work to regain the trust of the Valencian people. “If they aspire to be back on par with the people, honor the victims and be fair about what has happened, they are obliged to do two things,” he added. The first, “evaluate from criticism and self-criticism.” The second, “compensate for what happened with a reconstruction that allows people to live normally again and have the certainty that this will not happen again.”

Cano has a degree in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid, has a postgraduate degree in Commercial Management and Marketing from the ESIC and is currently the executive president of the Valencian Association of Footwear Entrepreneurs (AVECAL) since 2015.

The regional Executive highlights her relationship with the footwear sector, which began in 2010 when she was appointed general secretary of the Elche Footwear Industrialists Association (AICE). In 2020, she assumed the interim presidency of the Federation of Spanish Footwear Industries (FICE), which she held until 2022. Currently, she holds the position of general secretary of FICE (Federation of Spanish Footwear Industries). In 2023 she was appointed member of the Executive Committee of the Alicante Chamber.
