Nikita Mazepin has gone into counterattack. The Russian driver is disappointed by Haas, his former team, who has left him despite having basically accepted the conditions that until then the FIA had imposed to continue racing (basically, the renunciation of national symbols). And now he has launched a foundation, calling it We Compete As Onein open controversy with the #WeRaceAsOne promoted by the Federation, and which, in the intentions of the FIA, must prevent any kind of discrimination within motorsport. With this initiative, Mazepin intends to give support to Russian and Belarusian pilots who – even without blame for Vladimir’s crazy behavior Putin – have been marginalized by the FIA and banned by various national motoring federations (Great Britain and Germany above all). All in contradiction – according to him – with the policy of openness promoted by the Federation itself.
“As you know, I no longer have the contract that allowed me to compete in Formula 1. At first, the FIA allowed me to participate as a neutral athlete, but then Haas canceled my contract. So I decided to launch a foundation: this one will support athletes who have lost their chance to compete in this sport at the highest level due to an unsportsmanlike decision“Mazepin said on social media. “We will provide jobs, financial support, psychological and legal help in case athletes want to talk about their situation. The foundation will be called ‘We Compete As One‘. Thank you for the support you will give me and others“.
Haas’ decision to unilaterally terminate the contract with Mazepin and his sponsor (Uralkali, the Russian potash giant) was nevertheless taken for granted given the war in Ukrainewhich has alarmed the entire West and – in a small way – even Formula 1.
