California.- Ismael Zambada Imperial, alias “The Fat Mayito“, son of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada”, was sentenced to nine years in prison in the United States on drug charges, although he could be released sooner because of the time he has already served behind bars.
Judge Danna Sabraw, of the Federal Court of the Southern District of California, determined the sentence of nine years for “El Mayito Gordo” after a hearing held on the morning of June 24, 2022, where he explained that the sentence is “sufficient but not larger than necessary.”
To the son of “El Mayo” Zambada the time he has been detained since November 2014, when he was captured by elements of the Navy in Culiacán, Sinaloa, will be taken as credit, for which he would only have to serve a year of sentence.
Zambada Imperial, also known as “the good boy“, is being held at the San Diego Metropolitan Detention Center, and his sentence did not clarify whether he would be transferred to another prison to serve the remaining time.
In April 2021, it was declared guilty of importing and distributing methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana into the United StatesHowever, in the plea agreement, the authorities dropped the charges of money laundering and co-directing a criminal enterprise. In 2019 he was extradited to California from Mexico.
The accusation against Ismael Zambada indicates that he conspired to transport the drug to the United States and then launder the money obtained to transfer it to Mexico “for the benefit of the members of the Sinaloa Cartel and associates”.
Also accused of the same operations are Ismael Zambada Sicairos, alias “Mayito Flaco”, and Iván Archibaldo Guzmán, son of “El Chapo” Guzmán, who are fugitives from justice.

“El Mayito Gordo” is the third son of “El Mayo” Zambada to face US justice, since in 2019 Vicente Zambada Niebla, “El Vicentillo”, was sentenced to 15 years in prison, although he no longer appears in custody in the system of US prisons, so it is likely that he will be released thanks to his collaboration as a protected witness.
Previously, Serafín Zambada Ortiz, alias “Sera”, was arrested in November 2013 and sentenced to 5 and a half years in prison, and in September 2018 he was released to return to Mexico.
