The Colombian Camilo Sanchez This Saturday he became the new champion of the longest downhill in the world, held on the Monserrate hill, in which 25 riders from 12 countries participated.

“The competition is getting better and better, it is gaining more life and more international recognition, that’s why my relegation was very strategic. This year we were only eight Colombians in the competition and maintaining the victory in the country is something that fills me with great joy and It motivates me to keep fighting for my dreams,” said the new champion.
“Downhill” is a form of mountain biking in which participants compete on a totally downhill path. Additionally, it features obstacles that force competitors to perform a variety of jumps.

Sánchez, considered one of the most technical and fastest cyclists in Colombia, showed his expertise and in the qualifying stage he was the best and, in the final, he scored 4 minutes 30 seconds and 84 hundredths for the 2.5 kilometers of the route. In 2021, Frenchman Adrien Loron won with a time of 4 minutes 31 seconds and 48 hundredths.
This year the podium was completed by Colombians Juan Vélez, champion of the urban Manizales; and Marcelo Gutiérrez, Red Bull Monserrate Cerro Abajo champion in 2019. Of the 25 drivers from Germany, France, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, England, Costa Rica, Peru, Mexico, New Zealand, Colombia and Ecuador who started the competition, In the end only the top 10 times passed. The track was listed as the longest urban downhill race in the world by the World Guinness Records in 2019.
More than a thousand stone stairs make up the path, which represent about 95% of the route. This time the course had 27 obstacles, each of them between 5 and 7 meters high. The average speed that a pilot reaches when descending the track is approximately 30 kilometers per hour.
Monserrate is one of the most important local destinations for faith and Catholic pilgrimage, and a sanctuary visited by thousands of parishioners to ask for or give thanks to the Fallen Lord, a statue that was carved in wood by the Spanish Pedro de Lugo Albarracín.
