Max Verstappen he made it. The 24-year-old Dutchman, son of former driver Jos, is the 2021 Formula 1 world champion. The idol of all orange fans has hit the target at just 24 years old, but with 140 Grands Prix already on his shoulders, the dream of a whole sporting life. Verstappen today becomes the fourth youngest driver ever to succeed in this feat, behind Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and – just one month later – Fernando Alonso. The title won by # 33 today is even more historic because it interrupts the dominance of seven consecutive victories in the Mercedes drivers’ championship, which saw its own driver triumph since the beginning of the hybrid era, in 2014. Paradoxically, Verstappen is also the fourth ever rider with more GPs on his shoulders to be crowned champion. Only Nico Rosberg, Nigel Mansell and Jenson Button took more races.
He is beaten, for the first time in the last four years and for the second time in the last eight, Lewis Hamilton. The Mercedes standard bearer alternated with Verstappen leading the championship for the entire year, but ultimately failed to complete the feat – which would have been unique in history – of his eighth world title in his career. The Hasselt native is also the first Dutch champion in the history of Formula 1 and the second driver to win the drivers’ title with Red Bull. A big party, of course, for the Milton Keynes team, which celebrated their last world success in 2013 with Sebastian Vettel.
