Secretary Landini, where was he when he received the news of the assault?
Saturday was an incredible day for me. I was at my house, in Canossa, in the province of Reggio Emilia, with the trolley in my hand, doing the shopping.
Then?
I had not yet finished paying when I received the call from the CGIL comrades: “Maurizio, they are attacking the national headquarters” …
It looks like a movie.
A shiver. I turn on the television, see the live images on Rainews. I understand everything. A few minutes later I was already running by car to Rome.
Maurizio Landini, secretary of the CGIL, tells how – after the assault on Corso d’Italia – the great demonstration of the trade unions was born. He explains why that gesture for him is “An attack, fascist and squadron, on the world of work”.
Do you think Forza Nuova and the other attackers had a strategy?
I was convinced that it was a preordained plan, prepared before the event, with clarity and coldness.
What made him think that?
It is no coincidence that after meeting in Piazza del Popolo they split into many different groups, to travel a not short journey and reappear in Corso d’Italia to hit us.
How come you?
The CGIL had nothing to do with the green pass. I am sure that we were, before the demonstration, the target of an aggression that has only one clear matrix: squadist and neo-fascist.
Because?
What they have done against the CGIL is a demonstrative and political act. They wanted to hit us, but with us, symbolically the trade unions, the confederal world and the whole world of work.
Was the green pass just a pretext?
We were cold target. They were not interested in the issue of the green pass for workers. Here is another decisive point: this protest, with the right to demonstrate and the conditions of the workers, has nothing to do with it.
Because?
They instrumentalize a serious problem, which exists in our country, for purposes and purposes that have nothing to do with the problem that people are experiencing. But precisely because this is my opinion, I am equally sure that this gesture, this strategy, and the men who have tried to implement it should not be underestimated in any way.
Did you want a harsh answer?
When there are crimes of this nature we must apply all the laws we have.
Meaning what?
I’m interested in the result. It is important to affirm a principle written in our Constitution: organizations that explicitly refer to fascism must be dissolved in order to rebuild a new fascist party in Italy. Anyone who continues to profess such a goal is attempting to pursue an unacceptable design.
It wasn’t just the neo-fascists.
In fact, having said this, there is the issue of how to respond to the social unrest born after the pandemic. To do this, the government and politics must realize that work and the problems that people experience in the post-Covid period must be put back to the center.
And what do you think about the green pass today?
As is well known, the CGIL, with CISL and UIL, has been arguing for months that the vaccine must become mandatory, exactly as it happens, in our health system, for others that are already mandatory.
So what then?
This is why I believe that the vaccine is the best way to make as many people safe as possible, also in the light of what science tells us. It is the best way to do it, not only in Italy, all over the world.
However, the vaccination obligation does not exist today.
In fact, for some time we had asked the government for a transition in the application of the green pass. In particular, all the tools that are needed, starting with the tampons, must not be borne by the workers, but by the companies.
And who has to pay them?
We asked the government to drastically lower the price of tampons made for purposes related to job certification.
Then?
That the tax credit, which has expired, be restored for all health care expenses that have already occurred. Also because in the workplace, in addition to vaccines, it is necessary to maintain all the distancing rules that have allowed the activities to continue: I speak – just to give examples – of masks, protections and sanitizations. Also because, if these precautions are not observed, there is a risk of not fighting the virus in the best possible way.
Today you say: “We have chosen to demonstrate also for work”.
Anger must be responded to. It is clear to everyone that inequalities and poverty are increasing, that jobs continue to be too often precarious. It’s time to explain to people that they won’t be left alone. It must be explained to them that the future reforms, from the tax to that of pensions, to that of social safety nets, serve this purpose.
It’s not easy.
Intelligence is needed in the management of this phase. There is no need to feed divisions.
You have joined.
A minute after the attack I called the secretaries of CISL and UIL. We decided on the demonstration in three minutes.
What will the trade union square say?
Our mobilization has a simple goal: to say very clearly no more fascism, no more fences, no more walls between people, to put back at the center and apply the values of our Constitution, starting from the defense of the weakest and from centrality of work. It is the best answer we can give to the new squad.
