Russian gymnast Denis Ablyazin performed at a high level in the final in the vault at the Tokyo Olympics and was worthy of a gold medal. This opinion was expressed on Monday, August 2, by the Minister of Sports of Russia Oleg Matytsin, whose commentary was quoted by the press service of the department.
“I congratulate Denis Ablyazin with silver in the vault, and Angelina Melnikova with bronze in floor exercise. Denis showed a performance of the highest level in the final and deserved to win gold, ”the head of the Ministry of Sports noted.
Matytsin also drew attention to the fact that the Russian athlete scored the same number of points as the gymnast from South Korea, but became the second only according to additional criteria. At the same time, the minister recalled that for Ablyazin, the medal received was already the seventh Olympic award won in his career.
Based on the results of two jumps, Ablyazin scored 14.783 points and received a silver medal. The first place was taken by an athlete from South Korea Shin Ji Hwan, who showed a similar result, but he was credited with the victory due to the difficulty of performing the jump. The third was the Armenian Arthur Davtyan (14.733).
Ablyazin himself, commenting on the silver received, said that he did not understand the decision of the judges. At the same time, the athlete urged everyone to calm down against the background of statements that “gold was stolen from him”.
The XXXII Olympic Games in Tokyo are held from July 23 to August 8. More than 11 thousand athletes from 206 countries take part in the competition, 339 sets of awards are played in 41 sports. The Russian team includes 333 athletes.
