Mathias Van Hoof, the Belgian enduro rider who has successfully defended the colors of Husqvarna, has decided after much deliberation to end his sports career.
That career started in 2014 with a Belgian title in the entry-level category of the Belgian enduro championship and in 2016 led to a gold medal at the Six Days Enduro in Navarra, Spain, one of the biggest competitions in the world. In 2020, Van Hoof narrowly missed the title in the Open Class of the Enduro World Cup. He finished the season with as many points as his closest competitor, but the regulations stipulated that in that case the title would go to the driver with the most recent win.
“After this loss I had a difficult period. Still, I had found the motivation again for the new season,” says Mathias. But two serious crashes and the start of his own company ensured that he decided to put an end to his sports career.
Mathias has meanwhile set up his own company in mechanical and turbine maintenance at large industrial companies. “I will be abroad for extended periods this year, making a full championship race impossible. I can still be found for a training session or a ride with friends. You will also see me at competitions, but then on the other side of the ribbon,” says Van Hoof, who thanks everyone for all the support over the past seven competition seasons.
