It was drawn by the famous pencil of Giorgetto Giugiaro and subsequently created by Italdesign, to then be officially unveiled at the 1972 Geneva Motor Show: let’s talk about Maserati Boomerang, a truly new concept car that just today celebrates its fiftieth anniversary. A car that the same car manufacturer of the Trident defines “Extreme, futuristic, almost irrational, certainly beautiful, able to remain etched in the memory of all fans”which was revealed for the first time just on March 9 fifty years ago.
As mentioned, we are talking about an extremely original concept car. The basis used by Italdesign, in terms of chassis and complete mechanics, was a Maserati Bora, therefore with a 4,719 cc central rear 8-cylinder engine arranged at 90 °, capable of unleashing 310 hp to get to approach a maximum speed of about 300 km / h. The traction was rear, while the gearbox was a 5-speed manual. For those who are wondering if this two-seater sports concept coupe ever went into production, the answer is no: Maserati decided to keep it as a concept car and never transform it into a production car, despite its influence on the future models of the brand made itself felt, especially in stylistic terms. And we’re not just talking about Giugiaro’s later creations, but also in other projects, inspiring several car manufacturers in Europe and the United States.
Aesthetically speaking, the Boomerang stood out for one wedge shape and for the sharp and clear lines. Elsewhere, the sloping windshield, the panoramic roof and the windows with an original design stood out, especially on the two doors, interspersed with a strip of metal. A separate discussion deserves it the luminous signature of this concept car, which in the front resulted in squared-away headlights, while in the rear in horizontal lights. Inside the passenger compartment, the instrumentation of the dashboard was integrated inside the steering wheel, the latter without spokes, while the seats were very low. In short, a unique car of its kind, which unfortunately never went into production.
