Javier Mascherano is emerging as the one chosen to replace Gerardo Martino at Inter Miami. At 40 years old, the Jefecito will direct, according to various Argentine media, his former teammates Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Luis Suárez and Jordi Alba in the American MLS. Tata officially said goodbye to the Florida club this Friday.
Mascherano is currently the coach of the Argentina under-20 team after also leading the under-23 team at the Paris Olympic Games. The former center back was Messi’s teammate at the Camp Nou between 2010 and 2017 and for many years was one of his main supporters within the Argentine team. He then went to China and finished his playing career at Estudiantes de la Plata in the 2019-2020 season.
Tata landed at Inter Miami at the same time as Messi in 2023. His balance has been as follows: 67 games, with 38 wins, 13 draws and 16 losses during his stay with the team. “For strictly personal reasons I have to leave the club. I have to be in Rosario. “I have really enjoyed being on this team and I am grateful for the opportunity I have had,” Martino said at a press conference.
“I’m leaving Inter for personal reasons, I have to be in Rosario,” says Tata
For Mascherano’s arrival to become official, he must first disassociate himself from the Argentine Football Association (AFA). “We value that the successor has experience either as a footballer or as a coach. We want an attacking style. Our idea is to announce the coach in the coming days, we are very close to closing an agreement with a coach,” commented Inter owner Jorge Mas.
