Tour of Spain 2021
The Slovenian leader entered the goal of Alto de Velefique second, where Caruso won and the Spaniard from Movistar showed that he is willing to fight until the end
The Italian Damiano Caruso won alone this Sunday in the ninth stage of the Vuelta a España, in the Alto de Velefique, whose strong percentages did not make the red jersey Primoz Roglic hesitate.
Caruso, from Bahrain-Victorious, reached the finish line, after escaping more than 70 kilometers, ahead of the Slovenian leader of the Jumbo and the Spanish Enric Mas (Movistar), second overall.
Austrian Felix Grossschartner -second overall at the start of the stage-, Mikel Landa, Colombians Egan Bernal and Miguel Ángel López, and Adam Yates all gave time to the current Olympic time trial champion.
Roglic, who seems increasingly comfortable on the mountain as the stages of the Vuelta pass, eliminated most of his rivals, except for Mas, in the long final climb.
Landa (Bahrain) was the first to yield in the first sections of Alto de Velefique. The Basque climber left four minutes compared to the Slovenian, when his disadvantage was just 1 minute and 40 seconds at the beginning of the day. But the great disappointment of the day came from the hand of Bernal, Ineos leader in this Vuelta. The coffee grower, current champion of the Giro d’Italia, and great favorite for the final victory together with Roglic, gave one minute and five seconds to his rival.
