Marseille overtook Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco at the top of the French Football League, albeit temporarily, by drawing with its visitors Angers 1-1 at the opening of the seventh stage.
English substitute Jonathan Rowe scored (51) for Marseille, and Algerian Farid El Molali equalized (54), while his colleague Lilian Rao-Lesois (26) was sent off, before Neil Maupay, the southern club’s striker, was sent off.
Marseille could have raised its score to 16 points at the top, but it failed to win the fifth win in the league, raising its score to 14 points in third place.
Marseille suffered its first loss this season under the leadership of its new Italian coach, Roberto De Cerbi, when it fell to its host Strasbourg 0-1 last Sunday at the end of the sixth stage.
On the other hand, Angers remained at the bottom of the standings with only three points, after a third draw in the last four matches.
It seemed that Marseille was heading for an easy victory against the bottom of the standings, when Rao-Lesois was sent off after 26 minutes, but Maupay received two yellow cards within three minutes, leaving his team with ten players as well (30).
The southern team waited until the 50th minute to open the score through substitute Rowe, who entered at the beginning of the second half, but quickly received the equalizer three minutes later through Al-Malali, who scored his first goal in the tournament this season.
Marseille thought they had added a second goal through Michael Moreau, but the VAR canceled it due to a handball (68).
