He assures that the government’s first “occupation and concern” is to get them out of Afghanistan “as soon as possible”
The Interior Minister, Fernando Grande Marlaska, has assured that “everything necessary will be chartered” to repatriate both nationals and “all” Afghans who “in difficult times” collaborated and cooperated with Spain in an effective way as well as their families.
In statements to National Radio of Spain collected by Europa Press, the minister has assured that the Government’s first “occupation and concern” is to remove Spanish personnel, members of the diplomatic corps and the Ministry of the Interior from Afghanistan “as soon as possible” as well as “To all the people who worked with the Spanish units and their families.”
The Government decided to send two Air Force A400M aircraft from the Zaragoza Air Base to Dubai. The first of which took off shortly before midnight this Monday. The second is scheduled to depart at 9:00 am this Tuesday. At around 11:25 pm, teams from the Civil-Military Cooperation Battalion (CIMIC) of the Army and the Air Deployment Support Squadron (EADA) of the Air Force boarded the first aircraft. The Arab country will serve as the base of operations to make the jump to Kabul when the green light is received from the US authorities, responsible for airport security.
The minister, who has not appreciated the specific position of Spain in the face of the crisis in Afghanistan, has insisted that the Defense and Foreign services are working “without rest, 24 hours a day as it cannot be otherwise.”
The reality is that even the US intelligence services had not foreseen that the Taliban army would seize control of Kabul so quickly. The Foreign Ministry had relied on the evacuation plan of its diplomatic delegation in Afghanistan to these reports, which turned out to be too optimistic (they gave 30 to 90 days for the collapse of the country).
In addition, the chaos produced by the panic of reprisals yesterday disabled several runways of the international airport of the capital, plagued by hundreds of people who tried to flee even clinging to the landing gear of some planes.
On the other hand, Marlaska is in favor of the fact that in the matter of migration, especially in the economic one, where you have to work is “at origin” to “advance borders”, so that nationals feel safe in their countries to be able to develop their lives safely.
