In the great Formula 1 record book, Max Verstappen holds the primacy of youngest rider to have won a GP, succeeding at the age of 18, 7 months and 15 days. A success, achieved in the 2016 Spanish GP, which came on the day of his absolute debut at the wheel of the Red Bull (during the current season), and only a year after his Formula 1 debut still seventeen.
Among all those who were particularly impressed by the qualities of the Dutchman, there was also the current councilor of the Austrian house Helmut Marko, who recalled the qualities expressed by Jos’s son even before his arrival in Formula 1: “Everyone has a talent – commented the manager of Graz to the microphones of Servus TV – but the incredible speed he had expressed in a Formula 3 race, in constantly changing conditions, really surprised me ”.
Verstappen, at the time 16, managed to establish himself by exploiting all his driving skills, attracting the attention of Milton Keynes’s upper floors: “He was going two seconds faster than everyone else – remembers Marko – and it was clear that he possessed an extraordinary class ”. Yet, apart from the indisputable fabric on the track, the head of the Red Bull Junior Team was also blown away by the personality of the young Dutchman, especially in the face of the official proposal to step into Formula 1, in 2015, at the wheel of the Toro Rosso: “It was impressive even at that juncture – underlined the Austrian – he was prepared on everything. Usually a conversation with a pilot lasts 20 minutes, but with him continued for an hour and a half. I think it was the longest meeting I’ve ever had with a rider ”.
