Among the twists and turns of the British Grand Prix there was certainly Max’s seventh place Verstappen. Collecting debris lost from an AlphaTauri, the Dutchman unintentionally damaged the bottom of his car, losing 20% of downforce (about a second and a half per lap) and the first position gained shortly before due to a mistake by Carlos Sainz . With such a compromised pace it was impossible to return to battle for victory, but according to Helmut Marko the world champion took his part to worsen the situation, uselessly blasting away the first set of medium tires, which could still be used.
“When Max hit the debris, he thought the car could no longer turn. In those cases it is natural to think of a flat tire. We made him come back and then we saw that it wasn’t like that. But entered the pit lane so abruptly that it ruined the medium set. It was her mistake, we had to change his tires: that set could no longer be used. He was wrong, but in the situation he was in he was understandable“, These are the words of Marko a ServusTV. “We have cameras and sensors, our engineers examined the car, which was still drivable. Unfortunately a part of Tsunoda’s rear wing got stuck in the Venturi ducts, causing us to lose 20% of downforce. And with hard rubber (the one that Max used on lap 23 precisely because he had ‘wasted’ all the averages previously, ed.) the problems were even greater. We thought about stopping and saving the engine, but after all we were still in the points. As long as we could take points, we would continue. Luckily when we switched to soft rubber it went better. And thank God we still had that gum! It was much more performing, we made up positions and we fought with Mick Schumacher at the end of the race. In the end we made the right decisions: as long as we were in the spots, we had to continue“. And team principal Chris Horner immediately pointed out that these four points could be very important for the World Cup, just like the two torn in Hungary in 2021, in equally unfortunate circumstances.
