Close to the weekend that will lead teams and drivers to the penultimate round of the 2021 season, Formula 1 is therefore preparing to compete in the first edition of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix; an event that will take place on the new circuit of Jeddah, built and completed in extremis just in time to be able to host the Circus on the occasion of the first weekend of December. Consequently, no one before today has been able to conduct concrete tests on this track, if not in the simulator. The same Mercedes, reigning world champion and currently at the top of the constructors ‘standings – albeit with only 5 points ahead of his rivals Red Bull, with whom he is also in full battle for the conquest of the drivers’ title – wanted to see more clearly, so much so that to send, well in advance, some its engineers in Jeddah to personally evaluate the characteristics of the circuit.
A move, this, which has not instead implemented the Red Bull, which will come to its own considerations only close to the Saudi weekend, as is customary for any stage of the championship. This was confirmed by the head of the team’s youth program, Helmut Marko, who commented on the team’s decision to the Austrian press: “No, we didn’t – he has declared – that’s something I leave to Toto Wolff and his friend Alexander Wurz. But what would the sense be? As far as I know – he added – the circuit is not even completely finished, as there are still excavators and construction vehicles running around. Furthermore, the asphalt surface will only be cleaned at the last minute “. In conclusion, Marko then briefly replied to the hypothesis of the ‘rocket engine’ that the German company will use for the appointment in Saudi Arabia: “Believe me, our men are working hard to be competitive this weekend. In Qatar we got the set-up wrong “.
