Mariupol has become one of the great icons of the Ukrainian resistance to the Russian invasion. As you can see in this video, the port city on the Sea of Azov has suffered the biggest siege by Putin’s troops since the start of the war on February 24. Here we recall that many days before the images of the Bucha massacre became known, in Mariupol bodies had already been seen lying in the streets and the bombings of the mother-child hospital and the Dramatic Theater, where according to local authorities at least 300 people.
More than 400,000 people lived in the city when the conflict began. It is estimated that between 20,000 and 22,000 may have died, and that some 100,000 civilians are still waiting to be evacuated. 90% of Mariupol would have been reduced to ashes by the constant Russian bombing. US President Joe Biden has used the term genocide to describe Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
Russia speaks of “surrender”
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, 1,026 Ukrainian soldiers who were resisting in the Mariupol port had surrendered. The information has not been confirmed by the Ukrainian Army. Ramzan Kadyrov, Chechnya’s military chief and an ally of Putin, has called for the surrender of the last bastion of Ukrainian forces, holding out in the Azovstal industrial area.
